How to Follow a Live Result — and Why the Board on Your Phone Is Usually Behind
Every big event produces the same argument: two people looking at two screens, seeing two different results, both convinced they are right. Usually they both are, at different points in time. The important row is the last one. A social post has no update mechanism. When a result is corrected, the official board changes and the post does not, so the wrong version keeps travelling long after it stopped being true. That is not a conspiracy or bad faith; it is just how a copy without a feed behaves.
“Provisional” is doing more work than you think
Results at any serious event are published in two stages. First provisional, while a protest or review window is open, then confirmed. Between those two, a photo finish can be re-read, a lane infringement can be judged, a lift can be turned down by the jury, a technical review can change a score. Most of the time nothing changes, which is precisely why people learn to ignore the label.

Four habits that fix almost everything
Refresh less, not more
Hammering reload does not make a result arrive sooner — the board updates when the venue confirms, not when you ask. Once every thirty seconds during a live final is plenty, and it saves your battery and your nerves.
Read the status word
Official boards label results. 'Provisional', 'unofficial' or a small asterisk means an appeal or review window is still open. That label is the most useful text on the page and the first thing copies strip out.
Trust one source per event
Two tabs showing different numbers will not average out into the truth. Pick the official board, and treat everything else as commentary.
Never forward a screenshot
A screenshot has no timestamp, no status label and no way to correct itself. It is the single most common way a reversed result keeps circulating for hours.
For a multi-sport event, the official feed is published through the Commonwealth Games Federation site; for cricket, the ball-by-ball and statistical record sits with ESPNcricinfo. In both cases the rule is the same: bookmark the source, not a re-publisher.
The same discipline applies to draws and scoreboards
Nothing above is specific to sport. A state lottery draw has an official published result and a swarm of unofficial pages racing to post first; the pages that post first are the ones most likely to be wrong, and none of them carry liability if they are. Why does my app show a different medal tally from the official site?
Because your app is a copy. Every tracker outside the official feed re-publishes results after the fact, and each hop adds delay. The gap is usually small, but it widens sharply whenever a result is reviewed or reversed, because copies rarely carry corrections back through. When two boards disagree, the official one is the one that is right.
What does 'provisional result' mean?
It means the result has been published but a window is still open in which it could change — through a protest, an appeal, a technical review or a jury decision. Provisional results are correct most of the time, which is exactly why people stop reading the label. Treat anything marked provisional as very likely true and not yet final.
How often should I refresh a live board?
Far less often than most people do. Official boards push updates as results are confirmed, so refreshing every few seconds changes nothing except your battery life. During an active final, once every thirty seconds is more than enough; between sessions, there is nothing to refresh for at all.
Why is my phone alert ahead of the television?
Broadcast streams buffer, and streaming adds more delay than terrestrial transmission. Data feeds travel faster than video, so a notification frequently arrives before the picture. If you want to watch a finish rather than be told about it, turn the alerts off for the duration of the session.
How do I spot a fake or unofficial results page?
Look for three things: no status labels on results, no timestamp on the page, and no link back to the organising body. Pages that exist to collect traffic around a live event typically have all three problems, and many of them republish an early figure and never touch it again. A page that will not tell you when it last updated is not a results source.
Does the same advice apply to lottery draws and cricket scores?
Yes, and it is exactly the same failure mode. An unofficial page that publishes a draw result or a score without an official reference has no obligation to correct it.
