Mirabai Chanu: The 49 kg Category, the Two Lifts, and the Record Behind the Name

When a weightlifting session is on, most Indian viewers know the name and not the rules — which makes the broadcast hard to follow and the standings hard to read. This 6 Club explainer covers her category, how snatch and clean & jerk combine into a total, and the completed, historical results her reputation rests on. No live results and no medal predictions.

Quick answer

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter from Manipur who competes in the women’s 49 kg class. Her standing rests on completed results: an Olympic silver at the Tokyo Games, a world title at Anaheim in 2017, and Commonwealth Games medals across several editions. Her scores at any ongoing competition belong on the official results feed, not here — background details can be checked on her Wikipedia record page.

No lift numbers are published here. Personal bests and national records move, and a frozen figure on a games site is a liability rather than a service.

Why her category number changed

A recurring source of confusion in her career listings: the earlier medals are recorded at 48 kg and the later ones at 49 kg. She did not move up a class in any meaningful sense. The international federation restructured its bodyweight categories, and the lightest women’s class was redrawn a kilogram higher. Records set under the old class were not carried across automatically, which is why some record tables appear to reset around that point.

This matters when you read old coverage: a result from 2014 and a result from 2022 sit in classes with different numbers, so comparing the raw totals across that boundary is not comparing like with like.

The two lifts, and how the standings actually work

Snatch

Bar goes from platform to overhead in one continuous movement, caught in a deep squat and stood up. Technically the harder of the two lifts and the one where a small timing error ends the attempt.

Clean & jerk

Two movements: bar to the shoulders, then driven overhead. Heavier loads move here than in the snatch, so the clean & jerk usually decides the standings.

The total

Best successful snatch plus best successful clean & jerk. Three attempts at each. Fail all three snatches and there is no total at all, regardless of what happens afterwards.

The tie-break

Equal totals are separated by who reached it first, and bodyweight is used at weigh-in level — which is why lifters weigh in as light as the category allows.

The part broadcasters rarely explain is the attempt order. Lifters declare an opening weight, and the bar only ever goes up during a session — it never comes back down. Whoever declares the lightest weight lifts first, so the running order is decided by strategy rather than by seeding. A lifter can therefore sit at the bottom of the board for twenty minutes and finish on top, simply because they entered late at a heavier bar.

Which is why mid-session standings are not a ranking: until every declared attempt has been taken, the board shows who has lifted so far, not who is winning. It is the most misread graphic in the sport.

The record, stated as history

The results most often cited under her name are all completed and documented: a silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a world championship title at Anaheim in 2017, Commonwealth gold at Gold Coast in 2018, an Olympic silver at the Tokyo Games, and Commonwealth gold again at Birmingham in 2022. Those are historical facts about finished competitions, which is exactly the standard the recipe for this page sets: nothing from an event still in progress.

What is worth adding is the shape of the career rather than the medal list. She came through the national institute system from a village background in Manipur, and had a well-documented setback at the Rio Olympics where she failed to record a total — the exact scenario described above. The world title came the following year. That sequence, not the medal count, is the instructive part of her story.

How to follow the session from India

Weightlifting sessions are short and dense: a single bodyweight class is usually resolved inside a couple of hours, and all the medals in that class are decided within it. If you are choosing which nights to stay up for, pick the session, not the sport. Our rundown of India’s disciplines and when they run sets out the shape of the week, and the medal tally explainer covers why the table is ordered the way it is. For the live board itself, go to the official Commonwealth Games site.

Tracking it on a phone? Our live-result guide explains why an unofficial tracker sometimes shows a lift as good that the jury has already turned down.

No odds, no tips, no predictions

6 Club does not operate a sportsbook and does not publish odds, medal forecasts or performance predictions for any athlete. Nothing on this page is a tip. Our games are randomly generated entertainment with no connection to any sporting result anywhere.

Between attempts

There is a lot of standing around in a weightlifting broadcast — loaders changing plates, three-minute clocks, declarations being revised backstage. If you want something quick in those gaps, the games on 6 Club resolve in about a minute: Wingo and colour prediction are the two most people start with, and the free Wingo demo needs no account. Results are randomly generated and unrelated to anything happening on the platform in the arena.

Play responsibly (18+)

Games on 6 Club are chance-based entertainment, not income, and there are no guaranteed wins. Decide the amount before you start, treat it as the price of the entertainment, and never raise it to recover a bad run. Strictly 18+. See our budget-first guide and responsible-play guidance.

Mirabai Chanu & weightlifting — FAQ

What weight category does Mirabai Chanu lift in?

She competes in the women's 49 kg class. Earlier in her career she lifted at 48 kg, before the international federation restructured its bodyweight categories and the lightest women's class became 49 kg. That change is the reason older record and result listings under her name show a different category number, and it confuses a lot of people reading her career page for the first time.

What is Mirabai Chanu known for?

A long record at the top of the lightest women's category, including an Olympic silver at the Tokyo Games, a world title won at Anaheim in 2017, and Commonwealth Games medals across multiple editions — silver at Glasgow 2014 and gold at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022. All of those are historical, completed results. We do not report anything from an ongoing competition on this page.

How does weightlifting scoring work?

Each lifter gets three attempts at the snatch and three at the clean & jerk. The best successful lift in each is added together to make the total, and the total decides the ranking within a bodyweight category. A lifter who fails all three snatch attempts records no total and is out of the competition, which is why openers are chosen conservatively even by favourites.

Why is the clean & jerk usually the bigger number?

Because the bar travels to the shoulders first and is then driven overhead from a stable rack position, rather than going all the way overhead in one pull. That mechanical advantage means clean & jerk loads are typically well above snatch loads for the same athlete, and it is why standings often swing in the second half of a session even when the snatch order looked settled.

Where can I see her results at the current Games?

On the official Commonwealth Games results feed, which publishes attempt-by-attempt as the session runs. 6 Club does not publish live results, medal counts or placings for any athlete. Our companion piece on how the medal tally is ranked explains why an unofficial board can show you something the official one has already corrected.

Is weightlifting on the 2026 Commonwealth Games programme?

Weightlifting and para powerlifting were both included in the announced 2026 sports programme, which was deliberately compact compared with previous editions. Because programmes are confirmed edition by edition and can be adjusted, check the official Commonwealth Games site for the final list and session times rather than relying on a fixture page from an earlier Games.

Does 6 Club predict how she will finish?

No. We do not forecast medals, placings or lift totals for any athlete, and we do not run a sportsbook or publish odds. 6 Club is a casual entertainment games platform, and none of our games has any connection to a sporting result. Anyone offering you a confident prediction on a weightlifting session is guessing in public.
