T20 Stats Explained: Strike Rate, Average & Reading a Scorecard Properly
Half of every cricket argument online is two people using the same number to mean different things. This guide sets out what each T20 statistic actually measures, where each one misleads, and how to read a scorecard so the numbers tell you something true. No betting, no odds, no tips.
Batting strike rate = (runs ÷ balls faced) × 100 — runs per hundred balls, a measure of tempo. Batting average = runs ÷ dismissals — a measure of survival. In a 20-over game balls are scarcer than wickets, so strike rate usually carries more meaning, but neither is readable without the innings count and the phase the runs were made in. Bowling strike rate is the opposite idea: balls per wicket, where lower is better.
The six numbers that matter, and how each one lies

A worked example: same runs, different value
Take two batters who each score 40 runs in an innings. Batter A faces 25 balls; batter B faces 40. Both have contributed 40 to the total, and a highlights package would treat them identically. But A has used 15 fewer balls, which is close to three overs handed back to the rest of the order. In a format where the innings is capped at 120 balls, those 15 balls are the entire difference between a par score and a winning one.
Now flip it. If A was batting at number seven in the last three overs and B opened in a collapse at 8 for 2, the comparison reverses again — B absorbed pressure that A never faced. This is the whole point: a T20 statistic is only interpretable with its situation attached. Runs are not a currency with a fixed exchange rate.
Read by phase, not by season total
A T20 innings is three different games stitched together, and a player’s numbers should be read against the phase they were made in:
Powerplay (overs 1–6)
Fielding restrictions are on. High strike rates are expected; so are dismissals. Judge openers here, not on season averages.
Middle (overs 7–15)
Spin, sweepers out, boundaries harder. The best middle-order batting looks unspectacular and is worth a lot.
Death (overs 16–20)
Highest scoring rate, highest variance. Small ball counts make finishers' numbers unstable across a season.

Reading a scorecard in the right order
- The total and the overs first — you cannot judge any individual score without the team context.
- Balls faced, not just runs. The balls column is where the tempo story lives.
- The fall-of-wickets line. It tells you what situation each batter walked into; a 30 at 10 for 3 is not a 30 at 90 for 1.
- Bowling figures with the phase. Overs bowled at the death carry a different price than overs seven to fifteen.
- Extras. Quietly decisive in close T20 games and almost never mentioned in post-match arguments.
- Then, and only then, the averages. Career columns are context for the innings, not a verdict on it.

T20 statistics — FAQ
What is strike rate in T20 cricket?
Batting strike rate is runs scored per 100 balls faced: runs divided by balls, multiplied by 100. A batter who makes 45 from 30 balls has a strike rate of 150. It measures tempo — how fast someone scores — and says nothing at all about how long they last.
Is strike rate more important than average in T20?
Neither alone is enough, but strike rate carries more information in a 20-over game because balls are the scarce resource, not wickets. The useful habit is to read them together and alongside the innings count and batting phase. A high average with a low strike rate can actively cost a T20 team runs.
Why do T20 batting averages look so low?
Two reasons. Attacking roles accept dismissals as the price of scoring rate, so openers and finishers get out more often by design. And in a 20-over innings there simply are not enough balls to build a big score often. A T20 average around the low thirties can represent an excellent player.
How does bowling strike rate differ from batting strike rate?
They measure opposite things despite the shared name. Batting strike rate is runs per 100 balls — higher is better. Bowling strike rate is balls bowled per wicket taken — lower is better. Reading one as the other is one of the most common mistakes made by newer fans.
What is a good economy rate in T20?
It depends entirely on when the overs were bowled. Containing the middle overs is a different job from bowling at the death, where nearly every bowler concedes more. Any economy figure quoted without its phase context should be treated with suspicion — including the season-long numbers you see on graphics.
How many innings do I need before a stat means something?
There is no clean threshold, but the honest rule of thumb is that a handful of innings tells you very little, and single-season figures for players with limited batting time remain noisy. Always look at the innings or balls-faced column next to any headline number before you draw a conclusion.
Can these statistics predict what will happen in a match?
No. Statistics describe what has already happened; they do not forecast a result. Conditions, matchups, form and pure chance decide T20 games, which is why nobody — including anyone selling tips — can predict them reliably. 6 Club publishes no odds, tips or predictions of any kind.
